the green card system

The Green Card System was introduced on 1 January 1953 under the authority of the Economic Commission for Europe of the United Nations. The Council of Bureaux, established in London in 1949, manages the system.

MAP OF EUROPE OVERVIEW

    KEY : -
    Blue; Members of EU or EEA, & Switzerland. Green Card not required.
    Minimum cover requirement; *
  1. EU Countries;
    1. UK compulsory cover or,
    2. compulsory cover in EU country being visited.
Whichever is the greater.
  1. EEA Countries & Switzerland; Compulsory cover in the country being visited.
NB. *Policies issued by UK insurers provide this minimum cover..
    Green; These countries are members of Green Card system and a Green Card is necessary before travel.
     NB.4. Serbia. See note on Green Card which states that the card is only valid in the Republic of Montenegro and parts of Serbia controlled by the Government of Serbia.
    Andorra & Croatia are not members of either EU or EEA but are signatories to the same arrangements as the Blue countries.
    MIB state that Green Cards are technically not required, but recommend checking with insurers that cover applies.

Liechtenstein-Switzerland. NB. Liechtenstein is part of EEA but Switzerland is not.

Sardinia-Italy.
Vatican-Italy
